PLAY is a concept and a word that, in our opinion, incorporates everything that a youth capital should be. The goal of PLAY is to build the stage where young people can discover, learn and perform at their best potential, co-creating their city, life, work and future, both in our home country, Romania, as well as all around Europe. 

PLAY este un concept și un cuvânt care, pentru noi, exprimă tot ceea ce ar trebui să fie o capitală a tineretului în viziunea noastră. Obiectivul PLAY este de a crea un mediu în care tinerii se pot dezvolta, pot învăța și se pot desfășura, atingându-și potențialul lor maxim și muncind împreună pentru a-și construi viața, orașul, munca și viitorul, atât în țara noastră, România, cât și în Europa.

  • Addresses how young people can be an active part of our community, challenging our way of life in cities, improving it, and shaping it for our future needs. It is based on two key aspects on which a city’s life is built on: the built environment in which we exist, and the sum of all the human connections and interaction happening in the city. 

  • Tackles the issue of a young person’s path to individual sustainability and  personal fulfillment either by being able to have proper employment as a fair and stable workplace or through entrepreneurship. 

    In this, young people’s path of learning including the appropriation of up-to-date knowledge and skills enhanced by attributes of resilience, creativity and innovation provide a key success factor in achieving personal sustainability. Not the least, work is also about responsibility towards our surroundings and the way of contributing to the lives of people around us, by giving our best while doing it.

  • Is about young people’s quality of  life in cities that goes beyond individual success, but it is so much more than just our work. 

    This is about how we live and enjoy our life before and after work, it is about our way of life, our care for other humans and for our urban environment. Our lives in our cities of the future are clearly impacted by what we do today. If the young generation sets itself the right mindset and behaviour, we are deemed to succeed for ourselves and for the upcoming generations.

  • Aims to underline the role of young people as a responsible generation in these special times, as the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown the human perspective into a foggy cloud and has transformed our current reality.

    While we hope the cure and vaccine will arrive soon, we need to brace ourselves for the effects the virus will leave behind, physically, mentally, socially, locally and globally. How do we build the balance between mind, body and soul that will allow us to be resilient and feel safe through all the changes to come? How do we reach all those who need it most? How will all of us be safe? We will tackle the issues of mental health, peer and professional support and the enabling urban environment supporting the process of healing, while also keeping each-other physically healthy, too.

  • Aims to take the stage as cities of today are taking the leadership in saving our planet while some in a strong addition to what nations and countries do while pursuing the same goal. This is our commitment to the European Green Deal and the call towards all young people living, learning and working in European cities on one side and all European urban decision makers on the other side to work together in achieving a vision of carbon-neutral European cities by 2050 with the active contribution of today’s young people, leaders of the future. 

    We propose efforts which will engage young urbanites, city leaders and experts in working together towards creating a Young European Climate Pact which will enable the participation of young people in reaching this vision for 2050. While young people do not have the means to do hard investments, they are to become the actors in the forefront in shaping a responsible behaviour of urban societies towards protecting Earth, our natural habitat of existence. 

  • Aims to create a wide array of exercises of imagination about something that is almost impossible to control. Humans cannot control time, but what they do today, impacts the future undoubtedly.

    We get deep in imagining the far future. It creates a time-lapse of 30 years and it aims to create scenarios of the future from the perspective of today’s young people, children, and the city. We are actually creating a time-travel machine through which we send messages from today’s reality to the unknown future. Our commitment is to set the proper channels for our messages to arrive to our own selves in that future.

  • Arată cum tinerii se pot implica mai mult în comunitate pentru a aduce o schimbare a modului de viață în orașe și a-l îmbunătăți și adapta pentru viitor. Se axează pe două aspecte specifice vieții unui oraș, și anume locul în sine, care este mediul creat de către oameni, și legăturile formate între aceștia, toată interacțiunea umană care are loc în acest mediu.

  • Abordează subiectul drumului tinerilor către independență și împlinire personală, fie printr-un loc de muncă stabil, fie prin antreprenoriat. În acest drum spre independență al tinerilor, un set de cunoștințe actualizate constant și aptitudini susținute de determinare, creativitate și inovație sunt factori cheie pentru reușită. Munca este și despre a fi responsabili în ceea ce privește mediul înconjurător și modul în care ne implicăm în viețile celor din jur, dând tot ce avem mai bun.

  • Este despre noi și viața pe care o avem în orașele noastre, care, pe lângă muncă, înseamnă și ce facem în restul timpului, cum ne trăim viața și cum avem grijă de tot ce ne înconjoară, de la oameni până la mediul în care trăim. Viitorul orașelor și al întregii planete se clădește pe fundația pe care o construim azi, așa că trebuie să ne asigurăm că generația tânără este pe drumul cel bun, pentru a fi siguri de reușită, atât pentru noi, cât și pentru generațiile următoare.

  • A luat naștere odată cu pandemia de COVID-19, care și-a lăsat amprenta în viețile noastre și a făcut ca viitorul să fie unul nesigur. A apărut din necesitatea de a ne pregăti pentru tot ce va rămâne în urma virusului, de a crea un echilibru între minte, trup și suflet care să ne ajute să trecem în siguranță prin toate schimbările care au loc. Ne dorim să scoatem în evidență rolul tinerilor de generație responsabilă în această perioadă delicată. Vom aborda subiectul sănătății mintale, al susținerii reciproce și profesionale, dar și rolul mediului urban în procesul de vindecare, ținând mereu cont de cum ne putem sprijini reciproc în a ne menține sănătatea fizică.

  • Se alătură inițiativelor luate de orașele de azi pentru a ne salva planeta și susține tot ce fac restul țărilor și națiunilor pentru acest scop comun. Acesta este angajamentul nostru față de Pactul Verde European și apelul pe care îl lansăm pe de-o parte tineretului care trăiește, învață și muncește în orașe europene, iar pe de altă parte, tuturor liderilor urbani europeni, pentru a-și uni forțele înspre atingerea obiectivului de neutralitate climatică în orașele europene până în 2050, cu contribuția activă a tineretului de azi, liderii din viitor. Propunem eforturi comune care să implice atât tinerii urbani, cât și liderii orașelor și experți, pentru a crea un Pact Ecologic European al Tineretului, care va permite participarea tinerilor în atingerea acestui obiectiv pentru 2050. Deși tinerii nu pot face investiții majore, ei vor fi actorii principali în modelarea unui comportament responsabil al societăților urbane față de protejarea planetei.

  • Pune imaginația la încercare prin exerciții create în jurul a ceva aproape imposibil de controlat. Noi oamenii nu putem controla timpul, dar ce facem azi va avea, cu siguranță, un impact în viitor. Încercăm să ne imaginăm cum va arăta viitorul îndepărtat, pe un interval de timp de 30 de ani, și să creăm scenarii văzute din perspectiva orașului, copiilor și tineretului de azi. Practic, vom crea o mașină a timpului prin care trimite mesaje din realitatea de azi către un viitor necunoscut. Obiectivul nostru e să găsim canalele de comunicare potrivite pentru ca mesajele noastre să ajungă la noi, cei din acel viitor.

    Baia Mare, Maramureș

    You can find Baia Mare in the north-western part of Romania, surrounded by the beautiful eastern Carpathian Mountains in Transylvania. Here, the climate is moderate and has always been gentle and friendly to all life in the area. The city’s metropolitan area includes 5 neighbouring towns and 12 villages.

    Also, Baia Mare is the capital of Maramureș County, a region which is known for its rich historical, cultural and natural legacy.
    The population of today is the result of the culturally complex history and the generally peaceful way in which local populations dealt with newcomers and other populations who took over this region of the country. Therefore, the city is now home to more than 6 ethnic groups (the larger ethnic minorities being: Hungarian – approx. 10% and Roma – almost 2.5%) and more than 5 confessions.

    Gold, silver and copper have been mined in the Baia Mare area for around 2,000 years and the town’s history is bound up with mining. It brought prosperity to the town throughout time, but after the communist regime fell in 1989 the industry went into sharp decline, resulting in the city losing a third of its population in 25 years. This left Baia Mare struggling to find solutions in order to avoid becoming a post-communist ghost-city.

    The youth sector began to work for Baia Mare’s rebirth in the first years after communism. Through its institutions, youth organisations, but mostly through its youngsters, youth leaders, youth workers and other persons that supported the youth sector development, Baia Mare managed to become an example of good practice in this field at a national level. The recognition of this came when Baia Mare won the title of Romanian Youth Capital 2018- 2019.
